Last week, we took a look at the upcoming redesign for the Mercedes-Benz CLS.

But that's not the only big news coming out for Mercedes-Benz this summer--not even close.

The big, big announcement is the upcoming release of the first all-new, fully redesigned Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV in nearly four decades. That's a design, general powertrain, and overall bravado that's remained intact for 40 years. When that changes, the world of luxury automobiles changes.

We'll take a look at some of the top changes and redesigns that we'll see in the all-new 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

Smoother Edges

Partly for aerodynamics, and partly to follow European laws, the all-new 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is built to be smooth. Pedestrian safety laws in Europe demand that cars cannot have sharp edges, which was, quite literally, a cornerstone of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class' design strategy. The design team worked to find a happy balance--the new model is flowing and law-abiding--but still retains a lot of the iconic, square-bodied stance.

New Transmission, Same Great Sound

An all-new SUV could use an all-new transmission. The new 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class uses a clean-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission, up from a seven-speed in the 2018 model and the previous generation. It hints of smoother driving and improved fuel economy. The engine, though, is more familiar: a 416-horsepower twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8.

Fully Redesigned Dashboard

A few things remain in the front of this hefty SUV: a grab handle in front of the passenger (for particularly boisterous off-road adventuring), and the three-switch differential lock. Most everything else at the head of the cockpit is entirely new--but, familiar to those who have driven or drive more modern Mercedes-Benz sedans and crossovers. The new model took a leaf out of the book of the ultra-luxury premium daily drivers, and it wears the look incredibly well.

There's so much more to look forward to in the new 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class--this is just a small taste.

Be sure to check back as we learn more, to see pictures, video, specs, features, performance, tech, and more, before it's formally released in a few months.

Note, in the video above, that our friends across the pond utilize model-years reflective of the current year--therefore, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class in the UK is the same redesign as our 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
