Mercedes-AMG Technology is Always a Step Ahead in Durham; Learn About the Exceptional New Line of High-Performance Cars and SUVs

Many luxury name brands have their own, offshoot performance projects. BMW has its M-Line. Audi has its S-Line and a collection of R sport models. But only Mercedes-Benz offers the incredible power, advanced intelligence, and stoically German quality of AMG Performance. With over 50 years of engineering experience under its belt, AMG has a lot to offer.

Read on to learn more about the AMG brand, its partnership with Mercedes-Benz throughout the years, what it means, and what you can expect to see from this exhilarating line of sports cars.

History of the AMG Nameplate

Though the names are today nearly synonymous, AMG didn't start from within the Mercedes-Benz brand; it started as the passion project of Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, who dreamed of creating state-of-the-art racing engines for existing Mercedes-Benz cars. The partners adopted their names--together with the name of Aufrecht's native birthplace, Großaspach, to create their brand as their engineering feats became local gossip, and then world-wide legend.

"Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach" (Aufrecht Melcher Grossaspach) was born in 1967; it was making its way across the map by 1971.

By 1993, AMG and Mercedes-Benz officially partnered to create their first joint-development project: the Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG. The early 2000s ushered in a new era of AMG performance, with massive supercharged and bi-turbo engines. The last decade alone has debuted full in-house development of AMG cars, brand-new engines, new Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 racers, and a lot of awards.

AMG performance isn't going anywhere but up.

AMG Performance from the Inside, Out

While the body, chassis, and frame of course play a part in the overall delivery of AMG performance, the muscle begins on the inside--in the heart.

The purpose of AMG is to find the best way to improve and enhance power in the most efficient, comfortable, and seemingly-effortless way possible. It's the joint effort of the engine, transmission, drivetrain, exhaust, suspension, and braking system. It's a fully holistic approach to automotive performance.

Handcrafted High-Performance Engines

Each and every engine found under the hood of a Mercedes-AMG car, coupe, or SUV is a true work of art; and whether you're looking at it at rest, or feeling it in operation, you're sure to be moved in one or way or another.

The smallest and most agile engine in the AMG powertrain lineup is the AMG 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo, found in models like the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45. Small doesn't mean weak, though, and this pint-sized powerhouse rages with a roar that might surprise you. Another popular option from this performance brand is the AMG 3.0-liter V6 biturbo engine, found in models like the Mercedes-AMG E 43.

A step up from the entry-level power cars is the brand's robust AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo dry sump/standard engines, found in models like the Mercedes-AMG GT R (dry sump version) and the Mercedes-AMG S 63 Sedan (standard version). It's an incredible balance of heart-pounding energy with surprising efficiency that delivers a manageable, comfortable ride feel--but that can still send shivers down your spine.

At the very top end of the Mercedes-AMG powertrain lineup--at least for now--are two jaw-droppingly powerful handcrafted bi-turbo options: the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine, found in models like the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 Roadster and the Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV, and the AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo, found in models like the Mercedes-AMG S 65 Coupe and the Mercedes-AMG G 65 SUV. These are pure expressions of the French puissance-- great power, influence, or prowess--and the best examples of how far AMG and Mercedes-Benz have come in just half of a century.

They are best felt to be believed; we always encourage test-driving a Mercedes-AMG before you settle on any other car.
